Late Meiji period in date (1868 -1912) this beautifully simple letter opener was crafted with great skill and detail. It is completely plain apart from the exceptional three dimensional serpent which is wrapped around the base to act as the handle and give grip to the letter opener.The serpent is a guardian creature that protect coveted riches and treasures. The snake can also symbolize rebirth, transformation, and the continual renewal of life within Japanese culture. This would make a fabulous birthday gift, housewarming gift holiday gift or for any Japanese metal enthusiasts. Marked near the base: 10 MEASUREMENTS Letter opener measures 10" long by 1.25" wide and weighs 4oz.
