Antique Sterling Silver Novelty Medieval Style Halberd Letter Opener - Deakin & Francis 1910. This is a lovely original antique letter opener dating from the very last year of the Edwardian era - the piece carries full U. Hallmarks for Birmingham 1910 and has the makers mark for the fine quality silversmiths, Deakin & Francis. The item has great novelty factor as it has been fashioned as medieval era halberd, which was a combination spear / battleaxe weapon.
I've a feeling that the design is a slight nod towards the Arts & Crafts movement of the early 20th century, many of the styles of the craft movement harked back to centuries old designs and styles of the middle ages and renaissance era. I can't be certain if Deakin & Francis manufactured this design for a particular reason, or if it was pure whimsy - the year it was made, 1910 was the year that the Edwardian era ended with the passing of Edward VII - his son, George V then ascended the throne.I wondered if it was an anniversary piece, but I've yet to find any significantly famous event that would of happened 500 or 600 years ago that it could of commemorated. The opener is simple in form with the blade or spear point being made from a single piece of silver - attached to this is silver collar which is pinned to an ebony wood handle, which is meant to represent the shaft of the weapon. The hallmarks are punched to the middle section of the silver (see pictures 3 and 5). The opener measures 29.7cm in length and is 6cm across at its widest point - the total unpacked weight is 76g.
The condition of the item is very good - naturally, this was a used piece rather than simply being a desk ornament though it does make a fine desk ornament! There are signs of wear commensurate with its age and I've noted these below. The ebony shaft is good and solid with no splits or chips to the wood. The collar is securely pinned in place and there are some light contact marks to the silver through use (see picture 4). The'blade' part of the opener is good and solid with no dents or parts broken away - near the point there are some scratches to the silver from use (see pictures 8 and 9) - they actually look worse in the pictures than in reality as the images are magnified.
If these marks were bothersome to you they could be polished and buffed out if you desired, I actually don't mind them as they are testament to its long service. Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
