An exceptional George Shiebler, museum quality piece. The weight of this antique, Shiebler, sterling silver Etruscan (Medallion), letter opener is 3.5 oz. It is in the Etruscan (aka, Medallion) Pattern. It measures 9-1/2 inches in length.
It is marked on the back with the makers mark fo r Shiebler, sterling , 708. It is engraved on the blade ROMA.
It is engraved on the opposite side with initials, see photo. It has Six (6) graduated overlapping detailed Ancient Greco-Roman, medallions, "faux" coins on each side.
Each coin has a different profile head, on both sides of the coins. Shiebler founded his New York firm in 1876 with the acquisition of the Coles & Reynolds concern. Over the course of the next few years, Shiebler further aquired factory of Morgan Morgans Jr, the firm of John Polhamus and the flatware pattern dies of Albert Coles, Hebbard & Polhamus, AW Wood and Theodore Evans. Within a few years Shiebler consolidated the mfg equipment and moved to Brooklyn.
He continued producing flatware of his own design, most notably his medallion based "Etruscan".
