This beautiful French Art Nouveau style letter opener from the Victorian Era measures aprox. 11 1/2 long, and 1 1/2 wide.
The weight is 10.02 oz. This will make a lovely addition to any collection. Albert Marionnet was a prestigious French 19th Century sculptor who was born in 1852 and passed away in 1910. This piece is significantly unique compared to any other of Marionnet's pieces. The material is brass and another material, and Marionnet and any other sculptor would find this a difficult feat. Sculptors at this time period would traditionally not leave holes in their pieces because it made their pieces seem "unfinished", but Marionnet also broke that rule and brought more "life" and "dimension" into the piece by putting holes between the tree branches.
There are not many pieces like this. Since Marionnet died at 58, this piece is done when he was the most "awakened" and when he was a master sculptor. This piece would arguably be the most ambitious and the most accomplished piece by Marionnet. To add value, Marionnet purposefully made the longer side of the letter opener/ paper weight "bumpy" for a rustic feel. He made the part with flowers in a different material and put leaves on the shorter side.
On the back of the piece, he made it smooth and flat. The entire piece has high artistic value and was not an easy feat to complete as it broke all the rules and standard traditions and still managed to be a valuable piece.
