This is a delicate little letter opener at 6 1/8 and 16.5 grams. It has the normal light scratching due to use. There is a little'ding' on the tip due to someone probably using it for something it was not intended to. That seems to happen to letter openers frequently. In addition to the sterling mark there is also the 14K mark reflecting the applied gold on the medallion.
There is a symbol on the front that I have not been able to find a reference for. It consists of crossed mallets over a wreath. It was probably a presentation piece. Please see our other fine silver by Shiebler, Gorham, Tiffany, Durgin, Unger Brothers as well as other fine makers. We also have a very nice selection of sterling from the British Isles.
